The Genealogical Society of Utah was founded in 1894 to gather records that help people trace
their ancestry. In 1938 the society began preserving records on microfilm. Today 250 microfilm
camera operators are filming birth, marriage, death, probate, immigration, military, and many
other records in more than 53 countries. Each year about 100 million new pages of historical
documents on 50,000 microfilms and 25,000 microfiche and in 12,000 books
are preserved and catalogued. The library has the world's largest collection of genealogical
information.
Most of the records date from between 1550 and 1920. Therefore, the library has few records of
living persons. The library also does not have a record of everyone who has ever lived.
Family History Centres
In 1964 a system of family history centres was established to give more people access to the
library's resources. More than 3,500 family history centres now operate in 62 countries and
territories. Family history centres are usually located in Latter-day Saint meetinghouses and are
staffed by volunteers.
The Dartmouth N.S. Family History Centre is located at 44 Cumberland Drive in Cole Harbour.
The telephone number is (902) 462-0628. All are welcome.
