International Genealogical Indextm
The International Genealogical Index is a world wide index of more than 150 million names of deceased persons. It does not contain the records of living persons. Most of the names in the index come from vital records from the early 1500's to 1875. Others come from forms submitted by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Individuals listed in the index are not joined in family groups or pedigrees. To see if an individual is listed on a family group record or pedigree chart, check the Ancestral File program. The index is also available on microfiche.
You can use the index to -
- Identify possible family connections to extend your pedigree.
- Find birth, christening, and marriage information.
- Find the names of an ancestor's parents or spouse.
- Determine if Latter-day Saint ordinances have been performed for an ancestor.

Family History Library Catalogtm
The Family History Library Catalog lists and describes the records, books, microfilms, and microfiche in the Family History Library. It does not contain the actual records, only descriptions of them. The records described in the catalog come from throughtout the world, and include census records, birth records, family histories, church registers, and many other record types.
The library catalog is available on compact disk and on microfiche, both of which are updated regularly.
The Catalog can help you because it:
- Shows you descriptions of records that may contain information about your ancestors.
- Gives you an identification number (call number) for each record in the library. This number tells
you where the book, film, or fiche is located. This number is used when you order copies of films on loan through a family history centre.
- Provides on-line help, searches for key words and spelling variations, and identifies locality jurisdictions.
