Nova Scotia Census on Microfilm
Nova Scotia Census Returns for 1838,1851(Note: only part of Hants, Kings and Pictou survive) and 1861 include
the name
of the head of household and statistical information on other
residents. Census Returns for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 are
nominal returns, meaning every name is recorded. Indexes are increasingly
being made available for some counties and for some years but are not included on the films.
In later years smaller communities would grow to the point where they
became separate enumeration districts, while the same community would have been
included as part of a larger district previously. When two film numbers are given for a community in the same year, it generally indicates that the census
schedule in continued on the second reel.
